Marriage Monday: Why Compliments are the Key to Happiness

Compliments

Marriage Monday has not been forgotten. I know it’s been awhile since I did one of these posts but I swear I’m trying to do more of them for you guys.

For this Marriage Monday, I wanted to talk about why compliments are key to a happy healthy marriage.

I, of course, am only talking from my own experience so I’m not stating any of this as a fact. These are just things I’ve noticed that help bring me and my husband together.

So I know we hear compliments everyday, but there is something special about hearing it from your spouse. A simple “you look beautiful/handsome”, really goes a long way.

I think the reason compliments are so important is that it’s a way of showing gratitude for the other person. By saying a simple compliment here and there, you are letting your spouse know that you are grateful for them and that you are recognizing them.

Compliments are huge for staying connected with your spouse.

Nobody likes to feel ignored or unappreciated. So make sure you shower your spouse in some compliments today!

Here are a couple of my favorite compliments that always bring a smile to my face and make me feel special:

“you look incredible”

“I’m so lucky to be with you”

“I can’t wait to show you off”

“You make me so happy”

“I love being with you”

“I love everything about you”

These are just some examples of simple compliments that can speak volumes and really brighten your spouses day when they hear it.

I love when my husband surprises me with a little compliment like this here and there. It really helps me to know that he is grateful for me and that he is taking the time to notice me.

So next time you are at a loss for words or just sitting around, try saying one of these simple compliments to your spouse and see their face light up with a smile!

Till next time!

Marriage Monday: Decorating with your Spouse

Have you ever had to decorate with your spouse? Well, if you have then I’m sure you have experienced the clashing of tastes and ideas.

My husband and I have been in the process if decorating our new place in North Carolina, and boy is it tricker than I thought it would be. Not because we are conflicting in ideas (that much lol), but more so because I can’t make up my mind on anything.

My husband is the real design guy. He can just get an idea and go with it and make it happen. Me on the other hand, I am not as talented lol. I second guess all design choices, including his, which I’m sure is very frustrating. Luckily, my husband is a patient man.

Anyways, here are some lessons I’ve learned in decorating with you spouse:

  1. Hear each other out. Really listen to what style and the over all feel you want to have in your home. After all, this is a space for both of you to live in. So, I would suggest sitting down and each person writing out a list with the overall look, style, and feel they want for the house or room to have and then get together after and compare lists. This way each person will have their thoughts written down and you guys can compare and see if you have any similarities in design ideas.
  2. COMPROMISE. This is the most important one. Both of you will not get exactly what you want. So compromise is the most important thing to allow for both people to be happy with the new designed space. I always say the best solution is to figure out what you must have and what you can be ok without. Both of you keep your must haves and be flexible on the other things.
  3. Buy, Try, Return. Buy new stuff that you think you guys would like in your new space. Then try it out, place it in the space and see if it works. If it doesn’t work and you don’t love it, then return it! Design is all about trial and error. Sometimes the things we think would be perfect for a space, just don’t work when we get them home. So be willing to make the trip back and return something if it doesn’t work out.
  4. Keep the design neutral. I try to keep in mind when I’m designing and picking out pieces for the home, that I’m living with a guy and he probably doesn’t want to look at a bunch of pink girly things. At the same time as a girl, I don’t want my home to look like a man cave. So we always try to find neural ground that doesn’t lean to far to the feminine or masculine side. (Though, my office space is super girly, pink chair and all!)
  5. BUDGET. This is a big one. Pick a budget and stick to it! Don’t over spend on design accents. The reason why I say this one, is because I personally change what kind of design I want frequently so I like to keep that in mind and not blow a huge budget. I would say make sure you spend our money on the big staple pieces like furniture that will stay consistent in your home for years to come.
  6. If you can’t think of where to put it in your house, then don’t buy it! Too many unnecessary design pieces is just clutter. Don’t over clutter your home with random design pieces. Keep your design accents simple and practical. AKA- keep your design minimalistic.
  7. Make your husband hang everything! 😉 My husband is super tall so it’s only fair he hangs all the pictures lol. No but really, it’s so much easier for his to hold up a piece while I decide where exactly it should go.

Lastly, HAVE FUN! Designing together with your spouse should be fun and exciting. It’s a time to collaborate and embrace each others differences and opinions. Plus, if you decide later you don’t like something, you can always sell it on offer-up or let go and start over fresh.

Stay tuned for some posts about my different design style for the home!

Talk to you guys soon!
