Did you know that many people are actually not washing their hair the proper way?
Washing your hair the correct way is the first step to healthy hair, so it’s important to make sure you are doing it correctly. This will not only keep your hair healthier but it will also help decrease damage and build up on your hair. So, let’s get into the details on the proper way to wash your hair.
The Correct Way to Wash Your Hair
Washing your hair should not be a daily thing if you have long hair as this can strip the natural oils from your hair and cause excess breakage and damage to the hair.
It is best practice to wash your at max every other day but best to wash it only twice a week. This will help your hair stay naturally hydrated and healthier. The excess washing of hair can cause drying and excessive frizzing of hair and in some cases, extra build up on hair.
Next you want to take sure you are using high quality organic shampoo and conditioner. I suggest organic haircare products for washing as these cause less build up and damage to your hair. They also are overall healthier for your body and scalp.
This is my favorite brand that I have been using for 6 years.
How to Wash in the Shower
First take the normal amount of shampoo you use and start massage it directly onto your scalp and rinse your hair as usual. DO NOT massage the shampoo through to your ends. When you rinse the shampoo from your hair it will coat the ends and clean them, but do not rub shampoo directly onto yours ends as this causes excessive drying and breakage.
Then repeat the shampooing process for a second time. Yes, you should be shampooing your hair twice! The first shampoo will help remove any product build-up from your hair but the second shampoo will actually help clean your scalp and hair and you will be able to tell the difference between the 2 shampooing by the way the shampoo foams.
The first shampooing normally creates some mild foam but does not work itself into a large foam after the massaging the scalp. However the second shampooing after massaging the shampoo into your scalp there should be a very large, fluffy foam of shampoo and it should be easier for you to run your fingers through your scalp. This is how you know your hair has gotten a true cleaning and the build-up is removed from your hair.
Then after your second shampooing go in with the normal amount of conditioner you use and apply it only directly to your ends. Do not add conditioner to your scalp since your scalp creates a natural oil that protects the hairs closest to your head. If you add conditioner to your scalp you may notice lack of volume and excessive oily hair.
After the Shower
After the shower squeeze the excess water out of your hair by gently slipping your hand over your hair or by squeezing a towel around your ends to wring out excess water. DO NOT rub your hair back and forth with a towel as this causes breakage and spilt ends.
Then let your hair air dry for the least amount of damage possible. If air drying isn’t an option then apply a heat protectant and blow dry your hair on the lowest heat setting so that you are causing as little damage as possible to your ends.
And that’s it.
